Day 3 - Gulgong to Hill End To Gulgong - 210km (Trip Total 1220km)
This was day 3 of a 2 week, 2 up, 2 wheeled overloaded road trip from the Gold Coast in Queensland, taking the scenic route to Victoria and back again.
Whilst on our trip to Victoria in 2022, we stopped off for 2 nights at an awesome camp in the historic Gold Mining town of Gulgong in the middle of New South Wales, and while we were there, headed off to explore the nearby almost abandoned Gold Mining town of Hill End.

Just bought a 2011 650 abs today on July 29 2024 . Thought it was a great deal, bike has 12:21 14,000 miles and all you guys make me feel great about my new / used purchase. I sold my last bike in 2000 ( 1993 GSXR 1100) and now just looking to ride, explore and have a good time on 2 wheels again . Hope it’ll be good enough for 2 riders now and then.
Wow, what a great little spot you got there! Now I am jealous, will have to try to get out there one of these days!
It was an awesome place that's for sure. I'd love to go back there again.
I bought a 2000 BMW K1200 LT. Clutch went out at 58000 miles so I bought an 84 Honda Goldwing 1200 gl Interstate to ride while Im fixing it but foumd the old suspension needing a goimg through so ai bought a 2003 BMW R 1150 RT to ride while Im fixing the other two.
Hopefully you won't have any issues with the RT whlst the others are being fixed. A great excuse to keep buying motorbikes though! HaHa!
Have the same age bike, and in the same color. For me it's easily the best bike I've ever had. Keeper !
That's awesome! Glad you found a keeper! I did end up selling this one, I would have loved to have kept it but just didn't have the space or time to ride 3 bikes.
It's always awesome to be able to leave the luggage and explore locally - that's my plan for next year, find a central postion to camp, and explore each day in a different direction. Such a cool place where you stayed! Gulgong is pretty cool - we spent a couple of hours there on one of our Ute trips. I think most of the roads out that way are a bit f&*$ed... Leave those sheep alone!!! Great trip so far guys!!
Yeah, I like the idea of a central location too. Even though we were still heavy being 2up, it was so much lighter and roomier without the luggage. I'd stay at that camp again as it was nice and relaxing. Not cheap though! Gulgong was interesting, I'd like to explore the town history a bit more next time. Yeah, the roads everywhere on this trip were well and truly knackered after the rains. Thanks mate!
Bro I seriously had to rewind the bobtail bit, especially when you called, it a land mullet or something😂😂😂😂😂💯👍
HaHa! It all happened so fast that I weren't sure what type of skink it was at the time! 🤣
@@MrAusadventure I'm enjoying your journey some of your commentary is priceless ride safe brother v Trooper ✌️ from wa 💯🇦🇺
When I hear Mudgee I think of The Twelfth Man album with Ken Sutcliffe "The male model from Mudgee". Also, what is the significance of your Animal muppet? I've seen him in a few of your videos now. Used to be a keen drummer back in the muppet days and Animal was a favourite
HaHa! That takes me back! The Twelfth Man was hilarious back in the day! I always liked Animal but never drummed myself. If I was ever to play an instrument it would likely be the drums as good drumming is what appeals to me in music. About 10 years ago I was looking at Muppet styled helmet covers just for a laugh for some groups rides and I ended up getting an Animal one. So I decided to get a small Animal as a mascot on trips for a bit of fun too. Then Sharon ended up getting a Kermit to match her Kawasaki! 🤣
Well, that was one long necked sheep 😆🤣
They're the best kind! 😂
Power? There is zero power in these
HaHa! Each to their own!
That looked quite a sketchy ride once darkness came in.... and chilly. Hahahah... how was the bed? 😀
Yeah it was not a pleasant ride at the end of the day! It wasn't the last time we did it on the trip either! 🤣 The bed was ok. Lucky it was cold so I could curl up in a ball. 😂
@@MrAusadventure I'm glad I am short on occasions!! 😀
I remember that bee attack! We even saved one from the honey :D I know all those places, great to see them again. You really need a watch (or to notice the impending darkness coming 😅) What a weird place to stay, I remember the pics and insta posts from back then - actually quite nice, but definitely weird arriving in the dark!!
Yeah I was thinking about your trip to Coolah Tops when I edited the bit riding through Coolah. In future I think I just need to plan for 1 hour stops instead of the 15 minute stops I think I'll have! 🤣 And plan for the inevitable roadworks delays and detours. It was a great place to stay. We'd definitely go back.
The way you looked right, I thought you were considering riding along the train track 😀 That waterfall is superb. Someone seems to be using a laser level on your bike at night.
I do have a history of riding on train tracks so I may have been considering it! 🤣 A laser level might help me keep my bike upright! Great idea! 🤣
Fantastic trip.. Just make me miss old dame edna again😢😅
HaHa! Good old Dame Edna! 🤣
@@MrAusadventure yeah she is deeply missed in my garage, but she come visit now and then😊😊🍺
The road from Walcha to Bendemeer is my most favorite ride and I live at Wauchope lol
Yeah right! Such a shame you have to ride the boring section from Wauchope to Walcha to get to it though! 🤣🤪🤣😜
Nice work but I can't imagine going two-up for that long - then again I ride a gixxa and pillions aren't exactly a priority for sports bikes 😄 My wife says she would love me to get a more comfortable bike so we can do some trips... guessing you'd recommend a V-Strom eh! Hope you got some sleep in the caravan 🙂
It was a lot harder than solo touring that's for sure. This was the hardest of all my Victoria trips due to the lack of space and the extra weight. I'd only done 2up weekends away prior to this and not often as Sharon mostly rides her own bike. I'd definitely recommend a V-Strom for obvious reasons but Sharon also found it more comfortable than the BMW R1100RT that I had which surprised me. I think I was that exhausted by the end of the day that I slept really well even with the cramped space. It was really cold though! 🤣
@@MrAusadventure but for you banana benders cold is anything below 25 degrees! Or did your Victorian upbringing give you a proper cold barometer (for Australia anyway)? 😄
@@andrewrose9707 HaHa! I've definitely gotten softer these days living in QLD. I can handle the dry inland cold that you get at high elevation too, it's just that moist cold and Antarctic wind that you get in Victoria that I can't handle anymore. 🤣
Thunderbolts Rock has been graffitied ever since I can recall, and I've lived in northern NSW since 1972. They should get all the wannabe graffitists and hooligans to clean it as "therapy". It'd do them good and make the rock more aesthetically pleasing.
I agree, it would be nice to see it cleaned up, but I couldn't imagine it staying that way for long unfortunately. I imagine it would be a local youth drinking spot at night too.
Great video, I loved the caravan set up. I ride a 2017 VSTROM 650 purchased new in 2018. Done 57,000 fault free km so far. I have ridden all over that country, it is beautiful. I would not chance riding around dawn or dusk . My son and I stayed in Uralla for the night . He departed for Sydney early in the morning , I was going to head back to Brisbane a little later. I advised him to turn off the main highway and go over the Barrington Tops to Gloucester. Ten minuets out of Uralla he hits a large Kangaroo. Said he was only doing 80 km/hr but made a mess of his front mudguard, but fortunately he was ok. It was lucky he was riding his Harley CVO Streetglide , the one with the custom paint job . That bike is built like a brick shithouse. Back in Uralla we needed a tyre lever to get the mudguard a safe distance off the tyre. He called in to the Harley dealer in Tamworth to get clearance to see if the bike was safe to ride back to Sydney. Fortunately it was. A new mudguard had to be made and sent from America . As much as I love my VStrom, I don’t think it would have survived that Kangaroo hit. Keep having fun and stay safe
This was a great camp and we will go back there again as we enjoyed the stay and would love to explore the area more. That's a bummer about the kangaroo hit, but at least he was in one piece, that's the main thing. Yeah, I know it's not ideal riding at night but I often find myself getting carried away being a tourist on these trips and trying to fit too much sightseeing in as well as too much riding. It wasn't the last time on the trip that we found ourselves riding at night to get to accommodation. Thanks mate, you too! 👍
Awesome me and my Strom travel WA but it would seem there is much more to see where you are how's the Beast running great absolutely no doubt about that it's great to see two people enjoying a bike and each other looking forward to the rest of your journey stay safe be happy Ride Free ❤from WA
I'd love to come and explore WA and will at some stage. The east coast is definitely a lot different as the entire Great Dividing Range stretching from Victoria to Queensland offers amazing riding the entire way. Thanks heaps! Stay safe too! Happy Strom riding!

Haha sweet video my Aussie brother I just sold my GSXR 1000 and also my KTM 450 im heading towards 50 fast grrr I am seriously considering buying a 2008 what do you think ?
It's a great middle ground between those two bikes. The Strom doesn't do sports riding great and doesn't do technical dirt riding great, but is good at both and very versatile in what it can do. Also very reliable. You can't go wrong! Mine has put on 20,000km since this video was made and is still going well.
I'm done as much research as I can on the 2008 I know that's a little bit old but it's only done 32,000 k it looks pretty much brand new I'm just trying to get through to the person is I think this would fit my age group these days a bit easy on the back neck and wrists and seems a lot more comfortable thanks for the advice stay safe keep well clear of tin lid drivers💯👍🇦🇺
I keep thinking that you are so lucky having all this beauty on your doorstep... then remember that it is a days riding away. I should try and do some more big trips, Scotland and the north of England have a lot to offer on a bike, as does Spain and France. This trip is looking to be an epic AusAdventure indeedy!
HaHa! Yeah this area is somewhat local in that it's within a day's ride, but is still 500km away! 😂 I'd love to ride Scotland and also Spain! You have all of Europe on your doorstep! 👍
@@MrAusadventure I just need to stop buying bikes so I can afford to leave my house! 🤣

I've just put some in the post for you. I hope it arrives safely. 😂

The Wallalambie (SP) falls was fantastic looking. sorry for the spelling.
Wollomombi Falls are stunning! I'd love to see it in full flow!
🤣🤣You really need a riser on that old lady, got a bitt saggy in the suspension over the years. I rised mine 20mm and that bottoming out was history. You two are fun to watch 🤣 Ride safe my friend
Thanks mate, the suspension is definitely showing signs of aging a bit now and could do with some work. Hopefully Sharon will get a touring bike soon as well so she doesn't need to be on mine for longer rides.
@@MrAusadventure always better with 2 bikes. My wife dont ride by her self so my suspension need to carry 2 up aand luggage. Luckily the tiger do it wit ease. No need for upgrade there... Yet😄
I do love a good waterfall. I don't think I'd like a bike bottoming out though!
You and me both mate! We'd had a bad year with the weather that year and the roads everywhere were horrible. I could have probably gone a few extra clicks on the suspension though. 🤣
Pillion on a bike with panniers ? That's a challenge. 1:33 I recognize those tunnels. When I did my trip the Melbourne, I stopped a lot more. First stop was Ballina although I went from Brisbane (not the Gold coast) 12:04 I wish I knew about these places when I was doing my trip.
Yeah, it was a challenge getting on and off each time. We got better at it, but there's not a lot of room with both. We stopped a lot each day on this trip, way more than I would have on my own. But that was needed with the more cramped seating position. Some of our days ended up being long, with many days riding into te dark before we stopped for the night. Not recommended! 🤣 There are so many great spots to stop, Wollomombi was one I'd wanted to stop at heaps of times but never did due to needing to push on. This day was the same situation, but I was glad we stopped and I'd finally got to see the falls. 😍
Great stuff. You both look like you're having the time of your lives.
Thanks mate. It was an awesome trip and we were still in high spirits on day 1. Things got tense on the way home though! HaHa!
@@MrAusadventure Ooer. I'll see how it pans out. On Thursday I'm getting my first bike since 1987! A Classic 350 in dark black. See how I like it before getting a larger bike.
@@simonchilli2088 Oh wow! That's awesome! Well done and welcome back to the world of 2 wheels!
Ha ha! You two are nuts, but then you know that, and that's why I love yous 😆 That bottoming out is a bit of a worry - did you adjust anything in the rear suspension? Yep- we still end up riding west into the sunset... slow learners 🤣 Can't believe you'd never been in to Wollomombi Falls! My first naughty platform pic was there, on the old timber one, with a dirt path down to it with a switchback - so adventurey!! Tight fit, plenty of hip exercise getting on and off 😯
Thanks mate! HaHa! I obviously wound it up for the trip, but not enough for the odd bump. Some of the roads were pretty bad in spots but with not a lot of warning, just bang, sharp rise or hole. I actually put a hole underneath by the end of the trip from the tyre bottoming out. 🤣 Yeah, every time I'd wanted to stop at Wollomombi I was pushed for time. I always thought it was a bit further off the road too for some reason. Even that short stop though quickly ate up half an hour or more. It's easy done as you know. The next day was the same, small delays added together and saw us riding unfamiliar roads at night for over an hour! 🙃
Cool, thanks! I am being tempted by one of these, that looks identical to yours, local to me here in Toronto Canada. Oh what to do !? Cheers.
Hey leave that bike alone on kijiji I'm in Toronto also I'm interested in it to lllo
Do it! You'll love it!
My folks live at the Mornington Peninsula (eg free accommodation 🙂) so very familiar with many of those roads. Thinking about it, I rarely take the motorbike there unless it is to catch the ferry to Queenscliff. That way I avoid the Geelong freeway and enjoy some scenic riding instead... we've done that for the last two Tassie trips now the terminal is in Geelong. Arthurs Seat is a cracking ride both on the motorbike and the pushie. I've seen many motorbikes run wide at the 15km/h left hairpin at Franklins Lookout... it is tight, and steep, and catches you out if not ready for it! Thanks for another enjoyable video
Oh wow! We have definitely travelled a lot of the same roads! I can remember there being a few crashes on Arthurs Seat back in the day and I imagine it is still quite common. It was a challenging road as a learner when I started riding. Thanks for watching again, glad you enjoyed the video!
@@MrAusadventure No doubt ridden many of the same roads in Victoria and Tasmania, but I've never ridden the other states. Prior to doing the Tassie trips had mostly done day rides with the odd two dayer. I'll need to rectify that one day
Wow - amazing tree house... and who knew you're into waterfalls?? (well, probably Sharon did 😆) Good job the floating breakfast wasn't part of the snorkelling adventure... Awesome shots underwater though mate. Dirt Bikes, quad bikes, beaches, getting drunk... going full tourist? Nah just having a great time 😊 OMG Scooter Bro!! Everywhere!! Awesome trip mate, nice work Shazza!
Probably a real surprise to everyone that I like waterfalls! Yes it was mate! It was incredible!
Wow what an awesome tour.
It was absolutely crazy! So much fun! Just like riding dirt bikes on an active volcano the day before was! 🤣
WOWZERS! What an absobloominlutely awesome experience. Some scary stuff there, as well as some top notch views 🙂
It was insane fun mate! I loved every minute of it. I was gutted that I missed out on filming the end of the ride back which was crazy as well. Also wish I'd cleaned the rain off my lens! But I was concentrating hard on just riding to be fair! 😂
@@MrAusadventure I can fully get that... just trying to stay upright is enough of a challenge without needing to worry about cameras
It's hard to believe that motorcycles last that long these days. When I was young I seldom saw a bike get 20'000 miles and they were usually crap by then. I quit riding in 2002. I Hhad a wreck and scared my Mom bad so I sold my old Honda Magna 750. I have a lot of friends that call themselves bikers. That usually consists of someone with a Harley that rides it from bar to bar.. I never got into that. I'm not far from the mountains in North Carolina and I've made many trips to the mountains and stayed for days at a time. I'm coming across a good sum of money soon and I've been looking at the V Storms. If I can get my 5'7" frame on one without dropping it it will be on then! I quit drinking and I was only a social Drinker at that so I don't have much of a social life anymore. I'm 53 years old and I still do some solo backpacking but one of these days Sasquatch is going to get tired of me encroaching on this territory. The best logical thing for me to do is go buy a nice Yamaha V-Strom 650 granted I can get my leg over the thing. I've never heard anyone talk about the possibilities of lowering one but I'll do what I have to do. My money will be here within the week and I'm fairly excited. It been two years since I quit going to bars and I'm looking forward to some Adventure that does not require alcohol to tolerate the people that I'm around. I'm going to ride some of this weight off of me too. The last time I had a on-road off-road bike was back in 99. I had a Honda XR250L. I weighed 180 lb when I bought that bike. I was 28 years old. I dropped from 180 to 155 in 2 months just riding the wheels off of that bike. I never stopped to eat and I road a few Motocross tracks. That'll work you! I'm only about 4 hours from the North Carolina Beach. Maybe I'll start making trips there if I can keep all the Hooligans from messing with my bike. It gets crazy all up and down the North Carolina coast at certain times of the year. I've seen people put bikes up to flagpoles and them up in the air and that was 30 years ago. Their crazier now than they were then. On second thought maybe I'll just keep my direction towards the mountains unless I can find a place to lock a motorcycle up at the beach. Either way I'm ready to ride and I mean something fierce. It has been too long. Your video has sold me on the V-Strom. I always heard they were the best and and now I know. Great video!
You can't go wrong with the Strom! You can definitely lower them and also modify the seat to get closer to the ground without affecting the performance too much. They can be a top heavy bike but once you get used to the feeling of that, it's fine. They do weigh a lot so I doubt anyone would get one up a flagpole! HaHa! Good luck with it all, I'm sure you'll have plenty of awesome adventures. Thanks for watching and your comment.
Wow! Absolutely spectacular!
It was absolutely amazing! I just wish I'd cleaned the water off my lens more often!
I did laugh when you were expecting a flat ride in the mountains 🤣 That was technical as all hell mate! Was this what spurred you into getting the DRZ, or did you already have it then? That downhill was insane! What a great playground the volcanic gravel makes - and Sharon's a natural!! She's got guts that girl! You guys find amazing things to do - I watched the quad one too, but I always watch your vids on the big screen and don;t always get back to the computer to comment. Great stuff mate!
The original route we were supposed to do would have been more flat, more river crossings and beach riding etc but still hilly I imagine. I was glad we did this though as it was awesome fun. I'd already had the DRZ for 18 months by this point! 🤣 Yeah Sharon did really well once she got the feel for it. She picked it up quickly.
Man that must have been steep it even looked so on the camera and we all now how flat they make things look 😳
Yeah, it was steeper than it looks on camera as usual. You could tell how steep it was when I dropped the bike and the rocks were rolling downhill! Steep and incredibly soft! There's no way I'd want to take a heavier bike up it! 🤣
My 650 had just 2300km on the clock when I got it in 2009. It's now got 165,000km on it and counting. Zero problems apart from the usual consumables. Chains, sprockets, tyres, brake pads, oil changes and the like. I recently pulled the starter motor out to investigate sluggish starting. The brushes were reaching their use-by date. I cleaned things up and reinstalled it with a great result and have now ordered new brush set. Very easy to work on too, and it only took 15 minutes to sort out. Like you, I intended to use it for the big lap, but that just hasn't happened for various reasons. I added a used 2014 dl1000 to my collection about 2 years ago. Even though that's an awesome machine, I kept the trusty 650 as it still goes great, and still ride it as often as I can. It's like an old friend I just love spending time with. A lot of my riding is on dirt roads, living as I do between a national park and a national highway. I often encounter tourists on their way through mounted on all manner of bikes. A lot of Ewan/Charlie copycats complete with the obligatory GS with an internet of farkles. Knobby tyres that have never left the tarmac, go pros, and intercom systems. It's hilarious to see them looking down their noses at the "peasant" on his dirty poverty pack Suzuki when I invite then on a guided tour of the local points of interest. I know I'm having way more fun than them. I suspect they are worried that, while they look like they can take on anything, in reality they are worried the plucky little strom will embarrass them with it's capabilities haha. No plans to pension it off any time soon. Happy trails
That's so awesome! Have you had to do the valve clearances? I can definitely relate to it being an old friend that I love spending time with. I just feel so at home on it. Even though I get to ride bikes all day at work, I still love to throw my leg over the Strom for the short ride home. They certainly are an underrated bike. My scratched up old Strom doesn't get much attention from the farkled up shiny GS brigade either. HaHa! 130,000km now and still going strong, next trip coming up soon!
Gorgeous country we live in and yes I've travelled all these roads too. Time is often an issue of course but as my old Scots grannie used to say 'if I had my druthers, I'd druther not' do the motorways. Tablelands Way from Goulburn through Taralga, Oberon and on through Kandos Denman and Muswellbrook is a great alternative to going through Sydney.
Yeah, I don't like the motorway if I can help it, but I have done a lot of the great riding roads bypassing Sydney before on other trips. I've done Bylong Valley, down to Bathurst and then to Goulburn via Crookwell, but have also gone via Oberon as well. Both ways are awesome!
Im looking to buy one 2008 with 111k km too...
Awesome! Mine has 130,000 on it now and still no issues.
I know I should do some kind of location sharing thing, especially as I use my phone to navigate, so it is mounted on the bikes
I was talking to some students the other day about what to do when riding alone away from home. I mentioned that Cranky always shares his route with his wife and checks in before and after riding more remote dirt tracks. I'm heading away on a trip later in the year and I'm thinking about getting a garmin inreach before the trip just in case I get tempted to venture down side roads in the outback.
@@MrAusadventure That sounds a good plan, especially in a huge country like Aus... at least in the UK our trails have so many ramblers, horse riders and dog walkers on them, I'd be found eventually!
You're not wrong Mr Aus, I can't remember how many times I have ridden the Alpine road over the last thirty five years and the High Country and Murray Valley in general, but it never disappoints. And yes I've had one or two moments like yours with the truck...
I just love that whole area in general, the Snowy Mountains and the Victorian high country. I even looked into moving to the area 25 years ago and still think about it sometimes. Yeah, those trucks are a good reminder that we never know what is going to be around each bend.
What a crazy property to cruise around on, hard not to smile. Cheers 4 sharing sir.
Yeah, Bali has so many of these crazy areas hidden just metres away from suburban streets. Lots of gorges and waterfalls you go over without realising they're there. Most have been made into some sort of attraction.
Wow that looked like fun 😎👌
It was so much fun! We laughed the whole way, it was such a buzz!
Thank you for the video mate. Been going strong staying off in 3 month periods but relapsed again the last few days. Caffeine makes this world a place full of blown egos and stress. It is not the way we should live. It makes it painful to see when people in your closest circle accept you more when you are caffeinated. It sure helps socialize with people, but if everyone wasn‘t so caffeinated, we would also accept each other more uncaffeinated. The social aspect is what worries me the most, because in my own experience people dont like me uncaffeinated. When I‘m uncaffeinated I feel at peace, free from stress which leads me to shut the fuck up more. But in this world full of caffeinated people where constant conversations are demanded, it is hard to find the home you belong to. Hope somebody can relate to this
